Mirosław Bałka

Audi HBE F144 is a slideshow consisting of 20 images. The artist recorded and simplified to 20 frames the broadcast of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Auschwitz on a TV screen. On the slides we can see a black limousine surrounded by numerous bodyguards in black suits passing between the barracks of the death camp. As usual in the works of Bałka, when a video camera was used, the image is intentionally blurred and as-if crude, with clear “stripes” which are a proof of the material being recorded from a television screen. The title is the license plate number of the car, which carries Pope Benedict XVI, invisible from the outside. It can be associated the Latin habemus papam – ‘we have a pope’.
