Anna Baumgart

La Chinoise belongs to a series of sculptures which transfer the viewer into the third dimension of a fragment of a chosen media image. They were executed within the Revolution Is Not a Dinner series, initiated by the artist in 2010 and providing her reflection on the history of the Polish avant-garde and its political and historical dimension. The artist focused on the search for the icons of the Polish revolution, the Polish type of the egalitarian emancipation. La Chinoise was inspired by a still from J.-L. Godard’s 1967 movie of the same title, whose protagonists – the French students defining themselves as Maoists – are planning to carry out a revolution.

The Fresh Cherries film addresses the problem of hierarchization of victims of World War II, among whom were the women who had been recruited into the camp prostitution, who were not entitled to victim status after the war. Their suffering and humiliation has gone unnoticed, while the problem has been removed from the universal consciousness. The artist calls for justice and remembrance for those who themselves could not, or who had nobody to tell about their trauma. In the film, the artist combines a variety of stylistic conventions, expanding her piece with meta-subplots concerning nature and structure of the medium which she uses. The film is accompanied by an Appendix, which delves on the topic of the tabooization of the camp prostitution and touches the issue of working on the piece. The project was commissioned for the exhibition at the Centre for Arts in Falstad in Norway, where one of the Nazi concentration camps was situated during World War II.
